What it takes to win customers in Michigan

Michigan is several markets sharing one name. Its 83 counties had 10,140,459 residents in 2024 and 227,180 business establishments in 2023, and they differ enormously. Metro Detroit is the dense core: Wayne County had 1,771,063 residents, Oakland County 1,296,888 and Macomb County 886,175. Oakland had more business establishments than Wayne, 39,792 against 33,699, with fewer people. That is what a crowded search page looks like. A plumber or a dentist there is one of dozens on every screen, so ads need tight targeting and the website has to win a side-by-side comparison.

West Michigan is growing. Kent County had 673,002 residents in 2024, up 2.3% since 2020, and Ottawa County grew 3.4%, with 1,044 construction businesses in 2023. Growth brings new homes, new customers who have no favorite contractor yet, and new competitors arriving to serve them. Those markets reward businesses that get their Google Business Profile, reviews and service pages in order early.

Up North and in the Upper Peninsula, the calendar matters as much as the map. Mackinac County had 11,144 residents in 2024 but 46 accommodation businesses in 2023, against 74 in Macomb County with its 886,175 people. Grand Traverse County, home to Traverse City, had 3,549 establishments for 96,625 residents, roughly double the 1,771 in Lapeer County, which has a similar population. Across the Straits of Mackinac, Marquette County alone covers 1,809 square miles, against Oakland County's 867, and Keweenaw County had 2,161 residents and 59 business establishments. A business there may cover more ground than an entire metro county, and its marketing has to follow the seasons, the visitors and the long drives.

We are based in Michigan, and our client work so far runs from Clarkston, Brighton and Grand Blanc to Sterling Heights, Northville and Grand Rapids. Every plan starts from the same questions: who is searching, where they are, what season it is and what a booked job is worth. Planning happens on video or phone calls, so we can work with a business anywhere in the state.

Talk through your market with Nick.

Bring your website, your services and the area you want to grow in. You will leave with three clear priorities.

Do you only work with metro Detroit businesses?

No. Many of our clients are in Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Genesee counties, but we also work in Kent County and elsewhere. Planning happens on video or phone calls, so distance does not limit the work.

Does marketing work differently in a tourist county?

Yes. In places like Mackinac, Emmet or Grand Traverse counties, demand rises and falls with the visitor season. Ads should follow that calendar, and your site should change what it features as the season turns while staying useful to year-round residents.

Do you have an office near me?

We are based in Michigan and do not keep offices in each county. Every engagement starts with a free 30-minute strategy call with founder Nick Radachy, on video or by phone.

Is Modern Apex a Google Partner?

Yes, Modern Apex is a verified Google Partner. That matters less than how your account is run, so we also keep the ad account in your name and report on calls and booked jobs, not clicks.

How do you charge?

Management is a flat monthly fee quoted to the scope, never a percentage of ad spend, with no setup fee. For Google Ads we recommend at least $1,200 a month in ad spend, paid directly to Google.

Who owns the website and the ad account?

You do. Our websites are hand coded and you own the site and the domain. Your Google Ads account stays in your name, so you keep its history if you ever leave.
