Where Wix is genuinely good
Wix handles the parts many owners never want to think about. Its help center says hosting is set up automatically when you publish, that Wix runs security monitoring around the clock, and that it performs software updates for you. There are no plugins to patch and no server to manage.
Its real-world performance has caught up, too. The HTTP Archive's 2025 Web Almanac found that 74% of Wix sites delivered good Core Web Vitals to phone visitors, up from 55% a year earlier, compared with 45% of WordPress sites. Wix also posted the highest median mobile Lighthouse performance score of the platforms in that study, at 64.
If you plan to build and update the site yourself, need a handful of pages and want one predictable bill, Wix is a reasonable place to start.
Where Wix falls short for a service business
You cannot take a Wix site with you. Wix's own help center explains that its software architecture does not support outside hosting, so the site has to run on Wix's servers. You can move your domain to another registrar, but the design and pages stay behind. Leaving Wix means rebuilding.
A median mobile score of 64 also means half of Wix sites score lower, inside the 50 to 89 band that Lighthouse labels needs improvement. When a Wix page is slow, your options are mostly to take things off it, because you work inside the platform's code rather than replacing it.
The cost recurs for as long as the site exists. When we checked, paid Wix plans ran from $17 to $159 a month on yearly billing, and the free plan keeps Wix branding on a wixsite.com address.
And the hard part of the job does not change. A builder makes layout easy, but writing a strong page for each service and each area you serve takes the same effort on any platform.
Questions that decide it
Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself:
- Will you edit the site yourself every month? Wix rewards owners who do.
- Do you need many service and service-area pages? That is a lot of building inside any visual editor.
- Do you expect to change providers someday? A Wix site cannot be exported to another host.
- Does speed on phones matter in your market? Test your current pages in PageSpeed Insights before you decide.
- Would you rather have one predictable monthly bill, or a site you pay for once and own outright?
If you already have a Wix site
Do not rebuild just because of the platform. Run your most important pages through PageSpeed Insights on mobile, tap every phone link and submit every form. If the site passes Core Web Vitals and produces calls, improve the content first.
If you do move, treat it as a site move. Google recommends mapping every old address to its new one with permanent redirects, and it warns that rankings can fluctuate for a few weeks or more while the new pages are processed. Keep the domain in a registrar account in your own name so the move never depends on someone else.
How a hand-coded site compares
A hand-coded site is written for your business instead of assembled from a template. Modern Apex builds sites this way, and the client owns the site and the domain, so the site can be hosted anywhere and moved without starting over. The tradeoffs are a larger upfront project and edits that usually go through a developer or a simple editing setup rather than a drag-and-drop editor. For an owner who wants to do everything personally, Wix can be the better fit.
Related questions
Is Wix bad for SEO?
Not on its own. In the 2025 Web Almanac, Wix sites had a median Lighthouse SEO score of 100, which means the technical basics are handled. Rankings still depend on what you publish: a page for each service, real local detail, reviews and a fast experience on phones.
Can I move my Wix site to WordPress or another host?
Not as it stands. Wix says its sites must run on Wix's servers, so moving means rebuilding the pages somewhere else. You can transfer a domain bought through Wix to another registrar, which disconnects it from the Wix site, so plan the rebuild and redirects first.
How much does Wix cost per month?
When we checked in November 2026, Wix listed Light at $17, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159 a month, billed yearly. Prices vary by location and exclude tax. Core and higher plans add online payments and scheduling.
Should a contractor use Wix?
It can work for a small operation with a few services and an owner who enjoys editing. Contractors who need many service and community pages, call tracking and fast phone performance often outgrow it, and because Wix sites cannot be exported, outgrowing it means a rebuild.
