How to Review Overlapping SEO Pages
Two pages mentioning the same topic are not automatically a problem.
Book a Free CallThe decision to make
Two pages mentioning the same topic are not automatically a problem. Investigate when their purpose is indistinguishable or searchers repeatedly reach the less useful destination.
Build a query-to-page view
Group related queries and inspect the pages receiving impressions and clicks for a consistent period. Read those pages side by side. Different buying stages can justify separate URLs, while minor wording variations may not. Keep seasonality and a recent release in mind before interpreting a short reporting window.
Choose clarify, combine, or retain
Clarify pages that serve different needs by improving headings, scope, and internal links. Combine pages when one stronger destination can fully answer the same need. Retain genuinely distinct services even if some terminology overlaps. Record the rationale so a later content push does not recreate the same duplication.
Handle URL changes deliberately
If a page is retired, map it to the closest relevant replacement and use the hosting platform's appropriate permanent redirect capability. Update links and sitemap entries. Canonical tags are not a universal repair for unclear architecture. Verify the published response and monitor the intended destination after the change.
A working decision record
| Situation | What to inspect | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Different service decisions | Scope and buyer questions | Retain and clarify |
| Same answer in two places | Evidence and useful content | Consider one stronger page |
| Wrong page receives queries | Internal links and relevance | Improve the intended destination |
What to check before calling the work complete
- Use query and page evidence.
- Read the actual content together.
- Document the chosen page roles.
- Verify redirects and links if URLs change.
A practical question
Should every overlapping page be deleted?
No. Deleting without understanding intent can remove useful information and established destinations. Start with purpose and evidence, then choose the smallest effective change.
