Use Quality Score to locate a weak part of the search experience, then fix that part and evaluate real inquiry outcomes. Google reports the score at keyword level from expected clickthrough rate, ad relevance, and landing-page experience. It is a diagnostic, not an auction input or a guarantee of profitable work.
Start with the component, not a target average
Record the keyword, score, component statuses, date range, and intended service. A low ad-relevance rating suggests a different investigation from weak landing-page experience. Do not average every keyword into a single agency grade. A broad service keyword and a narrow installation keyword may represent different buyers and evidence. If there is no score, record it as unavailable rather than zero. Keep the business objective beside the diagnostic: suitable inquiries and accepted work.
Trace one search through the experience
Choose a meaningful service group and read its keyword, actual ad, and destination together. For a plumbing business, a water-heater replacement message should reach replacement information and a relevant estimate path. For an agency selling to plumbers, the keyword should express marketing intent instead. Check whether the first screen confirms the service, explains the offer, and makes contact practical on a phone. Read the page without assuming the visitor knows the company.
Make a supported change and retain the evidence
Write down the mismatch and the smallest useful correction. That might be a clearer service headline, a different destination, better offer terms, or an improved inquiry path. Preserve a before-and-after record and allow enough activity for a meaningful review. A higher score without better inquiry quality is not a business win. Conversely, a profitable service group should not be dismantled solely to make a diagnostic look cleaner.
A working decision record
| Situation | What to inspect | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Weak ad relevance | Keyword, message, and actual service | Align the offer and destination |
| Weak page experience | Mobile page, scope, proof, and contact path | Remove the specific customer obstacle |
| No score available | Keyword history and reporting eligibility | Keep the result unavailable, not zero |
What to check before calling the work complete
- Record all three component statuses with the date.
- Confirm the final URL and mobile inquiry path.
- Keep qualified inquiries and accepted work in the review.
- Do not promise a future 10/10 score from a page edit.
A practical question
Does changing the keyword match type automatically improve the score?
No. A match-type change is a targeting decision, not a substitute for a relevant message and useful destination. Review what changed in actual traffic and outcomes before crediting a score movement to the setting.
