How service businesses can get found in AI search

Clear business facts, useful answers, and evidence people can check. A practical guide to AEO and GEO without the magic-file pitch.

What is AEO, and how does it relate to SEO?

Answer engine optimization, often called AEO, focuses on making information useful when a search experience answers a question directly. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is another term used for visibility in AI-generated responses. For a service business, the practical work overlaps with good SEO: accessible pages, clear facts, helpful answers, and evidence.

Google states that its usual SEO practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not require a special AI file or a special schema type. Other platforms have their own discovery systems, and none offers a guarantee that your company will be recommended. See Google's AI search guidance.

Make your business easy to understand

Keep the business name, website, phone, service offering, and public location information consistent across your website and profiles. Separate a real office from an area you serve. Explain who operates the business and provide a useful contact route.

A company page should answer basic questions directly: who you help, what you do, where you work, and how someone starts. Link to verified profiles and relevant credentials. Do not invent offices or awards to make a small business look established.

Publish the answers buyers need

Write pages around questions you hear during estimates and sales calls. Explain the choices a customer must make, what changes the scope or price, and what the process looks like. Give a direct answer near the beginning, then explain the conditions and exceptions.

A tint shop can explain how customers choose among the films it actually installs. A landscaping company can explain how drainage, access, and material choices affect a project. A marketing agency can show how it verifies that a form submission becomes a real inquiry.

Use headings that describe the question, readable tables where choices are comparable, and real examples. Do not stretch a short answer into a long article just to reach a word count.

Give people something worth referencing

Original photographs, documented project decisions, working tools, and careful case studies help a reader evaluate your experience. Explain what happened, when it happened, and what the evidence can actually show.

For a case study, distinguish owner-reported business growth from ad-platform attribution. For a benchmark, describe the sample and exclusions. For a calculator, publish its assumptions. These practices make material more useful and easier to check; they are not guaranteed citation signals.

Independent coverage can also help people discover and assess a business. Contribute something useful to a relevant publication or community. Company-controlled profiles and paid promotional articles should not be presented as independent endorsements.

Keep the useful content accessible

Important answers should be visible on public pages, with internal links from related services and resources. Avoid hiding the entire explanation inside an image, a login, or a request form. Give images descriptive context and make the page usable on a phone.

Check indexing directives, canonical URLs, and crawler access. Structured data should describe content the page actually shows. A valid sitemap or markup does not compel a search engine to index, rank, or cite the page.

Measure what you can observe

Track relevant search impressions, visits, inquiry quality, and referrals where the platform provides them. Sample the questions customers ask across the AI products you care about and record the date, wording, context, and cited pages.

Responses can vary between users and sessions. A single favorable answer is not a stable ranking, and an uncited mention does not tell you how the system found the business. Some visits will not carry a useful referrer.

Use the findings to improve the website and the customer journey. An AI mention is useful when it helps the right person discover, understand, and choose your business.
